Creating the Rules for Sweet Saga

Gumzy Bat Swarm
Ice Cream Castle

I have a very rough outline so far of the rules..... at least in my head. The following is an attempt to get those rules down into a booklet for an upcoming game makers convention.

Welcome, players, to the world of Sweet Saga, you are the dreamers who first imagined this candy-coated world into being, only to return to the world years later to find it turned sour. A civil war has broken out and nearly everything in the world now wants you dead, especially the current ruler of the Kingdom.

Enemy cards offer challenge to the players, Loot cards offer the reward, Dream cards act as table-turning wild cards, and Encounter cards develop the story from the start of the game in Lala Land all the way to the Frosted Throne.

Along the way you'll encounter the ferocious Brownie Bear, deadly Gingerbread Warriors, Cultists who worship the ancient God, Cacao, and the Somnarian Sisters who have pledged to help you on your journey. You'll travel through the chocolaty Fudge Brownie Bayou where you'll surely run into fudge pop-wielding witches. If you survive the bayou, you will enter Cherrytop Tundra, where the Ice Cream Sammutts stalk their prey, and where Cremalanches wait to crush the unwary.

Your goal is to overthrow the one who sits atop the throne, and take the Kingdom for yourself. Let nothing stand in your way!

Goal of the Game

The goal of sweet Kingdom is to be the first player to reach the Qandi Castle and defeat the Mad King.

Game Setup

Randomly choose a player to be the dealer. Separate the cards into six stacks: one enemies and encounters stack for each realm, one dream card stack, and a loot stack. Shuffle the stacks. Unfold the board in an area with plenty of space. After each player has picked their pawn, place the pieces on the start tile of the board (just below the ‘Lala Land’ sign).
Each player receives a Player card on which they must store all their items. They also receive a dream, and a loot card to help them on their journey.

Turn Sequence Overview

During a turn, players must perform the following steps:
1. Make a movement roll.
2. Move the number of spaces indicated by the movement roll.
3. Draw a card based on the color of the tile you landed on. Green tiles are free spaces, red tiles are for enemies & encounters, yellow tiles are for loot, and blue tiles are for dream cards.
4. Interact with the card you pulled; enemy cards must be battled unless you are able to flee combat.
5. At the end of your turn, you may discard and loot or dream card in your possession.

Enemy cards

-You may retreat from combat if you roll X or higher.
-Every enemy has a Killing Blow or KB. This is the number you must roll at or above to defeat the enemy with one swift blow. If at any time in combat you roll the KB or higher the enemy is defeated.
-If you are killed in combat, you lose one dream or loot card of your choosing and move back to the start of the realm you are in as signified by the colored lollipop tile.
-After defeating an enemy, place the card, face down, at the bottom of the enemies and encounters stack they came from
After defeating an enemy, pull a loot card from the top of the stack. --You may keep it or immediately discard it back to the bottom of the stack.

Encounter cards

-Some encounter cards will force you to make a decision, some will send enemies your way, while others simply unfold the story of Sweet Saga before you and the other players.
-After completing an encounter you may either place it back at the bottom of the stack it came from or retire it to a graveyard, depending on what is stated on the card.

Dream Cards

-Dream Cards may be played at any time.
-You may keep up to X dream cards in your hand at any time.
Loot Cards

-Loot cards are your rewards for either landing on a Loot tile or for defeating an enemy. All loot is kept on the player tile.
-You may hold up to five loot cards at any time: three items in your pack, one in your left hand, and one in your right.
