When I was a child our family played a fast paced game with 2 or 4 players. I've never played any other game like it. It was great fun and would make a great game to market by itself - like Uno. Is this the right place to start? Thanks.

This game, was it a card game? Was it something your family made up? Is it a traditional game with public domain rules (like go fish or rummy)?
There are plenty of games published that are essentially just straight 52 card games with a fresh coat of paint and some special cards, so there is a market for this kind of thing.

You can create a wonderful game for your family as a meaningful Christmas present. Especially with POD printing for professional grade cards at a decent price, this is completely do-able. Just come up with a theme to create your own cool version and you're off to the races.
It's possible you might be able to take the game to the next level and get it published. This will only make the personal family copies that more special.
