Hi All,

I was wondering how bakelite stuff is made. Anyone knows if it is the same process as for other plastics, like injection using a mold?

Thank you very much,

Neto

Bakelite (thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin)

Bakelite, invented by Leo Baekeland (Belgium) in 1905, exist in three types: A, B and C

Type A turns into fluid when warmed up, it can be molded in any shape but it will turn into fluid when warmed up again.

Type B turns into a semi-fluid mass when warmed up. It kan be kneeded into all kinds of shapes but also becomes semi-fluid when warmed up again.

When a type A or B bakelite is heated more, a type C if formed. This can resist heat and will keep its form up to 300° C.

Good luck and keep us informed, bakelite is cool stuff!

I read somewhere that the pieces of the game YINSH are made of bakelite. Does someone know how this is made?

Jose
