Need graphics, anyone?

hi all,

I've been playing games for a while now, but never actually thought of making anything. But recently when i was on another BG site, i realised that a lot of people actually make their own.

anyway, i'm a graphic design student and would consider doing free design for cards etc. My work isn't the greatest, but it's more competent that the average person with no skills, so if people are interested I would be willing to look at a project. I also haven't always got lots of time, but i could fit some stuff in sometimes.

I've also noticed that a few other people have put up similar offers in the past; maybe it's worth your while to put a thread of contacts for arty people?

just an offer :)

Sounds like a great idea to me! Also, welcome to the forums! :)

For free? For real? Are you looking for portfolio material or just have too much time on your hands? ; )

Nice!

To Admin : isn't it better to make some 'sticky' notes or something (like the list of publisher that receive submission) for 'i will help with drawing/graphic designing' thing ?)
So that someone (like me :) ) who need that kind of help can mail them ?

(maybe in the next game I will try to have a completely full-blown graphic design cards, who knows :)

JackDarwid, yeah, that was what I had in mind. Just a sticky thread of contacts that people can look through.

SiskNY, I guess i'm just someone with a bit of time on his hands (I wouldn't say TOO much, or i just know i'll get too busy!) and I think this would be a good way to improve my skills and help someone at the same time :). I don't know if there'll be any portfolio-quality stuff, because portfolios really need a specific kind of work.

Anyway, I just want to reiterate that although i'm willing and keen to try anything, I'm not going to be professional quality obviously. Particularly in illustration, it can be darn hard to get a nice look, that's why all the big companies have pro's doing it all.
Still, as with any designer or artist offering services (free or paid) it's worth discussing with them about what you want. You might find that i can't really help you, but send me a PM or email and we'll see.

also, i might find myself swamped with multiple projects if people are keen, so no promises!

i just want you all to be aware of the limitations before your hopes get too high...

Cool, If I need some pictures, I will ask. Of course, I won't overabuse it. I won't let you draw the artwork of a 300 card CCG. I'll try to do most of the artwork my self but there is always many stuff that I can't draw. take a look at this thread for more info :

opps!, wrong thread, it is this one :

Now for the salary, I have a proposition. I intend to sell a downladable game. It will sell around 8 to 10$ online, so I imagine I would get around 5$ to 8$ per copy sold. So instead of asking you do to artwork for free, I could say that I would give you 1$ or 2$ per copy sold depending on the amount of artwork asked for the game. Which mean that if the game does not sell, you work for free, if the game do sell, well you earn something. You would also get a free copy of the game.

For the game I am now working on, the only thing I would need is some blank filling art for the books. Else, everything is done it line and shape art for the unit, and I will use real pictures for the commanders since me some of my friends are actually starring in my own game. ( it's part of the game's theme, long story )

Finally, could you give us some information about how much time it takes to make an average looking drawing in black and white and in color. Just to make sure we can evaluate how much of your time it could take make a certain number of your drawings. Maybe also specifying how much time you are willing to give in a week.

Do you draw them on a sheet of paper and then scan it into your computer or are you using computer software to do the artwork?

those are some good points/questions larienna.

Firstly, just so people have an idea of what's happening, since my first post i've got 2 PMs for work as well as a few more expressions of interest. Basically what i'm saying is that there's obviously a demand for art/design help, so if you have other contacts who can potentially do work, maybe it'd be good to post their details (with their permission!) so there's a bit of an index of people...

back to topic, Larienna, I had thought about doing something like you suggested, with 'royalties' for sales, but i decided that i would offer stuff for free, but obviously if you want high quality and more time invested, something like what you suggested definitely allows me to produce a better result. But for people who just want something a bit nicer than what they have, i don't mind doing it for free. Thanks for your generous offer though, we'll talk sometime :)

i was thinking that once i've done a bit of stuff for someone, i'll post some samples up so people can see what they can expect, as well as how long it might take. Essentially, a black and white drawing can take from about 5 minutes (especially if you want a sketchy style like "Bang!") to a few hours for a really tight character design.

Colour is trickier for me because i don't have great materials, but it's still ok... obviously takes a lot longer.

generally i would be drawing by hand, unless you wanted a certain type of illustration which i do on computer (but i don't imagine it would suit many board games).

For know, I intend only to use black and white drawing for the rule book. So hand drawing with no color is OK.

The idea behind the royalty stuff, is that generally, artist are not going to work only on a royalty based salary, they generally want either full payment, or part payment with additional royalties. In this way, if the game does not work, they get paid. This is the reason why I don`t want to hire an artist, it is not because I am cheap.

While if I share some of my royalties, I don`t pay money, I just make less money, so I don`t get any deficit. This is why I found your proposition interesting.

Anyways, it is not for soon, since my online demo is far from being ready. The game is currently in the playtesting phase for the demo.

hi again everyone.

just thought i'd upload this as an example of something i've done before... me and a bunch of friends used to play mafia (aka assassins/werewolf) a bit, so we made some custom cards with our pictures on them. it was all just a bit of fun, something to remember the year by, so don't think i would make your game look like this! it was just an hour or so...

keep your games going!! i've read some pretty awesome ideas at the forum already :)
