Hi

I was just wondering what everyones thinks about the world wide credit crunch/recession and how it will affect the board games market...

~ will the public be keeping a tight rein on their purse strings cutting out excess expenditure especially on items like board games or will the mere fact of not having as much disposabe income encourage more people to stay in rather than go out to pubs, clubs, cinema etc which in turn may inspire them to look for ways to have fun at home socialising with their family & friends by splashing out on a board game to play with them...

so I guess my question is do you see the current economic climate as a disaster or the opportunity for board games to reclaim & expand their slice of the entertainment industry?

Judging by the Video Game industry

Judging by the Video Game industry (which is a totally different entity, but also has an obsessive fanbase) the boardgame industry will be fine. We boardgamers are an obsessive lot. The industry won't lose business, and you may be right about them gaining some.

According to history....

we are in one of the few industries that does not suffer from recessions nearly as bad as other... in fact Monopoly helped Parker Brothers survive the Great Depression. People often see board games as cost-saving entertainment because the mere cost of leaving the house is squished.

Thanks!

Toy sales down, board game sales up!

The following link mentions that sales of toys were down 3 percent last year in America, while sales of board games were up 6 percent.

Board games appear to be doing quite well, whether that is in spite of, or perhaps even in part due to the weak economy, is a complicated question, but at least for now, things look good for the industry in my mind.
