I am working on a project with another designer and I need to get some quotes for art. I know there are a few artists here and I would be glad to keep it in the family if possible. First we are looking for B/W SciFi work. For those who are interested we need prices for full, half & ¼ page images. I would also like to see a sample, please attach thumbnails or give me a link to online examples. We are in the first stages of the project so we will not be replying to your e-mails for several months. I will personally contact everyone that submits a quote when we are ready.

You can check out my styles in my online portfolio at http://www.smackwell.com . If you like what's there, I can send you some quotes.

*****While of course prices can vary depending on whom you use I'll tell you that the standard rate is $100 for full-size B&W, and of course $50 and $25 for half and quarter page respectively.

Sure that is the going rate from what I hear. If it comes down to two artists that both would fit the bill and seem easy to work with the lowest bidder will win even if its $5 cheaper per image. We are a small operation so saving $50 in the end matters to us.

Just getting a list of possibilities right now so when its time we can move quickly on adding the art.

What's the going rate for full color art? Just curious?

In the context of gaming, I'm not sure what Full, 1/2 and 1/4 page means beyond ad space, so I can't help you here.

In terms of pricing for art for games, I have been making inquiries to established artists who are familiar with designing for games – boards, cards, boxes, tiles, etc. The one thing I do know is that the costs vary widely. Variables include how complicated the artwork needs to be, how much artwork, how many items that need artwork, production run and how easy the publisher is to work with (some artists find process/procedures/how many check ins to be quite extensive with some publishers and raise prices accordingly). Rates are often set at how many unique designs are needed in total. A game with alot of cards and unique artwork will cost much more than one without.

In terms of pricing against items like this, I have found a few established artists to come in around $65 per card or tile. I know I have read in another thread here that the range can be something like $35-$65 a card. I have talked to established designers who do games for the bigger German companies for $6500 (again, depending). For smaller companies or startups, they might come down if they believe that the process for approval is going to be easier (1 design submitted rather than 3, for instance).

At any rate, for the most part, one seriously gets what one pays for. There are a heap full of really crummy looking games out there and that seems to be the rule, rather than the exception. As design and art are one of the four components to games (mechanics and theme are two others), picking competent designers/artists are really important. Art provides the appeal that can be a great asset in attracting and retaining players and purchases.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Best,

Mike

I've had a different experience...

The artists we've worked with have not charged "per card" or "per board", but rather by the hour.

They estimate how much time the job wil take, you pay some percentage (30 - 50% is pretty typical) up front and they do the design work. If things progress (because of revisions or miscommunications or whatever) in such a way that it looks like they'll miss their estimate, they let you know ahead of time.

For what it's worth, I highly recommend Hile Illustration (http://www.hileart.com). They're doing the art on our upcoming game (Calaboose), and it really looks great. They've been very helpful and very responsive to my input.

****Ew, I don't like that - but hey, if it's working out - great! I prefer a per job basis if they are doing a large chunk (or all) of the art. If it's a few pieces then there should be an agreed upon rate.

Color work pricing does vary widely and cannot really be defined. A lot of the reasons have been mentioned but even something like how complicated the art is could cost you more. Also, if the art is going to depict multiple characters, that will costm ore than one character. Want a detailed background? That will cost.

For a non-CCG, you really can't afford to high a price for color art _if_ you're doing very many pieces. If you are doing a 100-card game and each card has to have different color art, you are going to go bankrupt on to high a price. Assuming you can only find high-priced artists, then try to design that 100 card game to have only 30-40 different images (for example).

It's a tough call.

BTW , I would have responded sooner but the forum is not sending me emails indicating replies to the threads I have posted in (the correct box is checked though). I justh appened to see that a new message was posted here on the home page sidebar on the right.

Z-man,

My apologies for that. The forums e-mailing capabilities have been turned off by our ISP 'temporarily'. Until they come back online, the forum will not be able to e-mail you when responses are added to threads you have marked.

Sorry,
