Hello, I would like to create a TCCG but before I do that I would like to learn a litte about the history of TCCGs. Like what was the first one, what was the cause of staples such as a seven card hand? Why 60 cards in a deck? What brought about these rules? I dont want to reinvite the wheel, just learn a little about how it can to be. I've played card games such as mtg, DM, and yugioh. And want to learn a little about the history of these games, before I complete my idea. This is very important to me beause I wish to make a career out of building games and want to build a solid fun card game. Thanks in avance! =)

Magic, I'm gathering

I was under the impression that MtG was the first modern TCG, giving rise to the 60deck/7hand tradition. I know the first release was in Novemberish 1993. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collectible_trading_card_game)

The story of MtG in many ways shows the importance of a simple, elegant, yet expandable design. I read in the pamphlet that came with the MtG "Beatdown" boxed set that in the initial design of the game, combat was a bit more complicated. All creatures had a Power, Toughness, and Initiative statistic. Creatures with the highest Initiative did damage first, and then the next highest and so on. In playtesting, it was determined that that was too cumbersome and slow, so it was simplified by the first release. Originally non-permanent cards included Sorcery, Instant, Interrupt, and Mana Source (in order of ascending quickness), which was eventually squashed down to just Sorcery and Instant for simplicity's sake. Although I do see the value of keeping them separate, I got into the game with the stack squashed and have always favored the strategic net it threw down.
