A Monumental Advance

Isn't wonderful how one simple change can leave the game running in a totally different direction? These past few weeks I have treaded through a complete turn around (for the better) in my game Battle of the Aces (so much that the name will be different). Same mechanics just organized differently.

The theme of the game was close to none; no real depth in meaning. Until I decided to patch the enormous hole in my game design; the none existant theme.

Mal's Design Cauldron - Day 2

Well, my hopes of having a day where I figured stuff out for at least one of the things bothering me yesterday remain unfulfilled at the moment, so I'll just do a stream-of-conscious thing, I guess.

Right, problems. What's in the way?

Let's start with Colony. I'll give you the rundown again, along with how far I'd progressed it.

New Game Design Contest at The Game Crafter - The Time Challenge!

The Game Crafter - The Leading Print On Demand Game Publisher

Fall is upon us. The kids are headed back to school, the crops are ready to be harvested, and the leaves will soon be changing on the trees. It is about this time of year that I always think of the changing seasons, more than any other time of year. And that leads us to the premise for this contest. We want you to design a game where time is a resource to be managed. For example, where you can actually manipulate time, like you can in games like Red November. Other games for research include Chronos Conquest, Village, Seasons, and T’zolkin.

Mal's Design Cauldron - Day 1

Well... not really day 1 of the design, but day 1 of blogging and throwing my ideas out into the open.

[Beginning bit]

So at this point in time, I've got three contenders for my first game. Obviously depending on how things go, one will end up becoming my focus and the others will either be scrapped as time goes on or be put onto the back-burner. I've got a notebook I've been scrawling in for about a week with the rough outlines of mechanics, themes and also research on other designers. I'm thorough... ish.

Werewolf card design

VILLAGER2 copy_0.jpg

Hey there,

I'm completely new to BGDF, and, well blogging for that matter...

I hope to launch a Kickstarter campaign by the beginning of October to produce cards I've designed for the role-playing game "Werewolf".

Please see the attached images! I welcome any feedback, advice suggestions as to how best to go about getting this project backed...

Many thanks!

[Blog] - Making a High Quality Boardgame Prototype

MIND - The Fall of Paradise

After the initial reveal of the board-game on Reddit people were really impressed by how the game presented itself and that made me really happy. The next step is to offer interested viewers a chance to read the rules and see video tutorials of how the game plays but that is a different test for another time. This first, initial impression, I have passed really well and you can check everything at https://www.facebook.com/WhatWeMakeIs.

Protospiel Madison 2014

We're bringing Protospiel to Madison, WI on October 24-26th. We've already sold almost 60% of our available tickets with 2 months yet to go. If you want to get your prototype to the table, this a great opportunity. You can find out more at http://www.protospiel-madison.org

What do you want in interlocking tiles?

At The Game Crafter we have many requests for interlocking tiles, however, we're not sure exactly what the greater community is looking for, so we thought we'd ask. Here's a laser cut prototype of some various interlocking tiles we made:

What sizes and shapes would you want?

Is it more important to be able to rotate and interlock each edge of the tile, or is it more important that the tiles could interlock when upside down? (it's a geometry problem that you can't do both)

If you had interlocking tiles, what would you use them for?

Voting Begins in the 5th Street Challenge

The Game Crafter - The Leading Print On Demand Game Publisher

We’re pleased to report 65 entries in the 5th Street Challenge. It is now time for The Game Crafter community to vote on which entries are the best. They must narrow the field from 65 to only 20 semi-finalists. This is going to be a tough job, as there are some amazing looking games in here!
