Lose a turn, lose the game?

Whilst spelunking through many discussions concerning game components and mechanics generally disliked, i had the urge to reflect on some and share thoughts learn a bit about others here.

This began with a designer on BGG feeling as if his playtesting was not doing well because of a lose a turn rule. One remedy was to give a player two turns in a row, thus giving all other players eessentialy a lose of turn and downtime for a player still evident.

Time Travel as a Game Mechanic

Back to the Future was hugely influential for me, growing up. I've always been completely fascinated by the manipulation and non-linear treatment of time. As anyone who's attempted it likely knows, implementing it in a way that's true to the spirit of time travel, while still being fun, fair, and interesting, as a multiplayer experience is extremely difficult.

Tradewars - Homeworld: Privateer *concept*

I have been thinking/pondering about the expansion scenario I call "Privateer". This scenario is meant to be an *expansion* to the original game in which one player will be the Privateer and the other players will be traders.

Now don't ask me about victory conditions - I'm still in the process of trying to put together the scenario.

Normally when players embark on a mission, the player must WAIT until the mission is completed BEFORE he can get the reward. This makes sense in general terms because it is reasonable that you don't get paid until you complete the mission...

Finally kickstarting

I've got the business license, made business banking account, website. The whole 9 yards. It's Orc con in cali. I'm here and I began the kickstarter before I left. This post will either be an alter to my success or a monument to my failure. I got sick to my stomach on the way here, worrying. I hope beyond all hope I succeed.

Tradewars - Homeworld: Untold rules

I was thinking about one aspect of the game and it made me think some more about another aspect.

Specifically I was thinking that "Mission" cards that allow players to use "Trade Starships" to earn credits are the most under-utilized aspect of the game. Some would argue and say: "How can the game be balanced?"

My response is pretty simple: I can't TELL players how THEY should play the game. If players choose to only use 50% of what is available to them - it's hard for me to tell players there is still 50% more GAME to be played.

New to BGDF

Just want to say "Hi" and I've enjoyed browsing the Forum and learning about the variety of issues and interests of the membership. I am currently converting a boardgame I created in 1984 to a card game (yes, I'm not a spring chicken). I've been trying to find a website that provides the names/themes of all boardgames to see if my idea is already out there. I haven't been successful. Any ideas about where I might look? Thanks in advance!

Welcome To The Rodney’s!

The Rodney's - Game Design Awards at Gamehole Con

What are the Rodneys? Great question. They are the name for our just launched Gamehole Con game design award. If you look at any of our annual logos, you will see an armored fellow squaring off against some foe. At Gamehole Con command central, we have always called that guy, Sir Rodney. So, that will be the name of our game design awards.
